On July 10, 2023, the University of Georgia Golf Course hosted a Special Olympics of Georgia Regional Tournament. With over 100 supporters, friends, and family members, the event provided an excellent opportunity for everyone to get outside, get active, and connect with each other.
Grouped by scoring averages, 28 total players competed in stroke play matches, some playing nine-holes while others played eighteen.
Those less familiar with golf had the chance to meet Golf Course staff, learn more about the sport, and have their questions answered and their interests peaked.
Other attendees worked on their putting and chipping while participating in skills competitions at the driving range.
Dave Davis, Lifelong Special Olympics supporter and founder of the Kathy B. Davis Foundation, organized this year's tournament at UGA. Davis is no stranger to enhancing opportunities on the golf course, and he continues to find new ways to provide every individual an opportunity to get involved.
Davis established the Kathy B. Davis Foundation in his mother’s name with a single mission: "To support and create life enhancing opportunities for individuals with intellectual/developmental challenges.”
The Kathy B. Davis Foundation utilizes donations to provide grants to Special Education teachers in Cherokee County. This year, the Foundation also provided Special Education scholarships for two university level students – one at Kennesaw State, and the other at UGA.
As the University of Georgia continues to grow, the UGA Golf Course remains dedicated its mission of inclusion – creating and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere for all groups.
